The sculptor Constant buys laminated steel and he cuts it out when he needs it. So, he doesn’t throw away any steel : he re-uses every off-cut or every scrap from his previous works.
He likes working with tools from the iron and steel industry, such as the anvil, the oxy-cutter or the arc welding.
His last formats are rectangular vertical panels (50 cm long - 200 cm high). They are either hanging on a wall or standing on a base. These panels are sometimes rolled up and look like cylinders.
He perforates the panel surface creating organic shapes without previous sketch. Constant takes the greatest advantage of the solidity and the rigidity of the steel. By sculpting openworks, he makes them flexible, lighter and easier to manipulate.
Constant doesn’t want to start sculpting blindly because he doesn’t believe he is necessarily going to achieve what he intends to. His works gets a meaning through a lack of balance and instability. This way of working requires sustained attention.
